Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class. Sometimes it helps children to review what they do know and what they don’t know. In this problem they do know that Nina shared a muffin with her friends. They don’t know how many friends she shared with. How many friends could there be? What part of the muffin did each get?
Headline Story
Nina had a muffin. She shared it equally with some friends.
Possible student responses
- I don’t think Nina shared it with just one friend because it says friends. So the smallest number of people Nina could have shared with was 2, so the muffin would be shared 3 ways. If 3 people shared the muffin, each person would get 1/3 of the muffin.
- If 4 people shared the muffin, each person would get ¼ of the muffin.
- The more people who share the muffin, the less each person gets.
