Introduction
The goal of Headline Stories is for children to learn to translate situations and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. What information are they given? What information is missing? Encourage children to think mathematically to complete the problem.
Headline Story
Janny cut a ribbon into _____ equal pieces. She gave away all but _____ of the pieces. What fraction did she keep? What fraction did she give away?
Possible student responses
- If she cut the ribbon into 12 pieces and gave away all but 1 piece, then she kept 1/12, and she gave away 11/12.
- The number of pieces she cuts tells you the bottom number.
- If you add the top numbers of the fraction she gave away and the fraction she kept, their sum is the number of pieces.
