Introduction
Sometimes it helps children to review what they do know and what they don’t know. In this problem, they do know that there will be 20 girls at the meeting, and they know that 1 bag of microwave popcorn makes 10 cups of popcorn. They don’t know how much each girl eats or how many bags of popcorn they will make. What is possible? What is impossible?
Headline Story
There will be 20 girls at the gymnastics club meeting. A bag of microwave popcorn makes 10 cups.
Possible student responses
If each girl wants 1 cup of popcorn, they should by 2 bags of popcorn.
If they only buy 1 bag, each girl will get a half cup.
If each girl wants 2 cups, they should buy 4 bags.
