Introduction

Share the Headline Story with the class. Encourage students to create problems that can be solved using information from the story.

Headline Story

Nancy found two worms on the sidewalk. When she placed them end-to-end along a ruler, they measured a total of 5 $\frac{1}{4}$ inches.

Possible student responses

One worm could be 1 inch and the other one would be 4 $\frac{1}{4}$ inches long.
One worm could be 2 $\frac{3}{4}$ inches long and the other one would be 2 $\frac{1}{2}$ inches long.
If the two worms were the same size, they would be 2 $\frac{1}{2}$ inches plus another $\frac{1}{8}$ of an inch.
