Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the students. To help students get started, you might openly wonder how many quarts of milk the entire class drinks in a day, or how long it would take one student to drink what a cow produces each day.
Headline Story
Milk cows in the United States produce an average of 26 quarts of milk per day. How much milk do you drink each day? What can you conclude from these facts?
Possible student responses
- I drink 3 glasses of milk each day. I think each is about a cup of milk. In 4 days, I drink 12 cups of milk, or 3 quarts.
- By making a table, I can see that it would take me over a month to drink all the milk a cow gives in a day!
