Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to use logical reasoning to draw conclusions about the car wash.
Headline Story
Ms. Jenkins’ class held a car wash. Students charged $2.25 for cars and $3.50 for vans. The proceeds were distributed equally to four different charities.
Possible student responses
- The number of cents in the total proceeds must be a multiple of 25.
- For washing 20 cars, the class would earn $45.00.
- If they washed 10 vans they would earn $35.
- If they washed 22 cars and 12 vans, they would earn $49.50 from the cars and get $35 + $7 for the vans, for a total of $91.50.
- Each charity would get more than $20.
