Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to think of creative ways to find a good estimate for this problem.
Headline Story
Our class has 22 students in it. We were told that about 
of the students in our class were taller than average. Can that be correct? What might that mean?
Possible student responses
- Since 22 cannot be divided evenly by 5, this must mean that the number of students who were taller than average was one-fifth of a number close to 22 that is divisible by 5.
- If there are 25 students in the class, 5 were taller than average.
- If there were 20 in the class, 4 were taller than average.
