Introduction
Encourage students to use the formulas for the areas of a triangle and rectangles as they respond to this Headline Story. You might also ask students to draw the two triangles that could form the rectangle they describe in their responses.
Headline Story
The area of a certain triangle is _____ square meters. The base measures 12 meters. The height is _____. What is the area of a parallelogram with the same base and height measurements as the triangle?
Possible student responses
- If the triangle’s area is 48 sq m, the height is 8 m, and so the parallelogram’s area is 96 sq m.
- The parallelogram’s area is always twice the triangle’s area.
- If the triangle’s area is 18 sq m, the height is 3 m, and the parallelogram’s area is 36 sq m.
- The parallelogram’s area is always a multiple of 12 since the base is 12 m.
