Read the Headline Story to the students. If students are not sure how to begin to answer the question, you might want to suggest that they draw nets on grid paper.
Headline Story
Heidi and Peng each built a rectangular prism. They do not look the same, but Heidi tells Peng that they will have the same volume. Can you think of some dimensions for the figures that make them look different but have the same volume?
Possible student responses
- 1 × 2 × 6 = 12 cu units and 3 × 2 × 2 = 12 cu units
- 2 × 3 × 6 = 36 cu units and 3 × 3 × 4 = 36 cu units.
