Introduction
This Headline Story lends itself to a wide variety of responses, many of which are hardly mathematical. As always, encourage students to focus on the math in the story.
Headline Story
Ashlee felt strongly that recess should be held before lunch. How might a survey help her to convince the principal?
Possible student responses
- She could survey the students at the school to find out the percent of students who prefer recess before lunch.
- She might survey the teachers or parents as well.
- She would want a majority of people to agree with her, which would be more than 50%.
- She would also need to survey enough people for the principal to think the survey reflects the thinking of the school population.
- She might include students of different grade levels to make her sample more representative of the school population.
