Headline Stories are sometimes just partial bits of information waiting for children to derive some possible consequences. They provide opportunities for children to learn the skill of problem posing. When children gain more experience, a Headline Story might be as brief as, “My sister is two years older than I am,“ but for now, children need ideas of what kinds of things to say.
Display the Headline Story pictured in the sidebar or draw it on the board. Encourage children to invent situations and create number and word problems about the picture.
