Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class. The goal of Headline Stories is for children to learn to translate situation and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. What information do we have? What information is missing? Is there extra information we do not need? Encourage children to invent good questions or problems to pose.
Headline Story
Sue has three stickers, but she wants five. Chris has some stickers.
Possible student responses
- Sue needs 2 more to make 5 since 3 + 2 = 5.
- If Chris has 4 stickers, together they have 7.
- If Chris has 3 stickers and gives them to Sue, Sue will have 1 more than 5.
