Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class. Sometimes it helps to review what children do know and what they do not know from the story. They do know that there are nickels and pennies in the jar and that Kay pulled out some coins. They do not know which coins Kay pulled out. Encourage children to think of creative ways to complete the story.
Headline Story
Kay had a jar with nickels and pennies in it. She pulled out three coins without looking.
Possible student responses
- She had to have at least 3¢.
- She could have had as much as 15¢.
- It could be 1 nickel and 2 pennies (7¢) or 2 nickels and 1 penny (11¢).
- There are only those four choices.
- Even if she did not look, she might be able to tell the difference between a penny and a nickel because they are different sizes.
