Introduction
The goal of Headline Stories such as this one is for children to learn to translate situation and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. What information do we have? What information is missing? Is there extra information we do not need?
Share the Headline Story with the class. Encourage children to invent good questions or problems to pose.
Headline Story
Jamie has a fish tank. There are 6 big fish and 3 little fish in the tank.
Possible student responses
- There are 9 fish in Jamie’s fish tank.
- There are more big fish than little fish.
- There are 3 more big fish than little fish in the tank.
- There are 2 big fish for each little fish.
- If there are also some medium-sized fish in the tank, there would be more than 9 fish in all.
