Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class. The possible responses are deliberately broader than what children are likely to produce in any session. With each Headline Story, you might lead to one new response by asking one new question explicitly to help children learn how to give more varied responses.
Headline Story
I took some dimes to the bank and traded them all in for dollar bills.
Possible student responses
- We don’t know how much money you have, but you have just dollars and no change left because you traded in all your dimes.
- If you have 3 dollars, you must have had 30 dimes to start with.
- If you started with 20 dimes, you have 2 dollars now.
- You couldn’t have started with 5 dimes or 15 dimes. you could only have started with 10, 20, 30, 40 and so on.
