Introduction
The purpose of the Headline Story is to have children understand and coordinate several pieces of information, and to practice finding more than one correct answer, in this case, all possible answers.
Headline Story
I’m thinking of a three-digit number. The hundreds digit and the ones digit are the same. The tens digit is the sum of the other two digits. What number could it be?
Possible student responses
- Your number is 121, 242, 363 or 484.
- You cannot use 5 or any larger digit in the hundreds and ones places because doubling these digits gives a sum of 10 or more.
- A sum more than 10 will not work as a tens digit.
- You cannot start with zero because 000 is just zero and not a three-digit number.
