Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the class. Help children see that the two pieces of information have a different nature: we know how many coins, not how much money Hillary has.
Headline Story
Hillary has four coins. Sophia has twice as much money as Hillary.
Possible student responses
- Sophia can have 8 coins.
- If Hillary has 4 pennies, she has 4¢ and Sophia would have 4¢ + 4¢, or 8¢.
- Sophia could have 8 pennies or 1 nickel and 3 pennies.
- If Hillary has 4 quarters, she has $1.00 and Sophia would have $2.00. She could have 200 pennies or two $1 bills and no coins.
