Introduction
The goal of a Headline Story is for children to learn to translate situations and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. What information do we have? What information is missing? Is there extra information we do not need?
Headline Story
Zoë had some marbles. She gave half of them to Sharon. Then she gave half of what she had left to Mike. How many did she end up with?
Possible student responses
- If Zoë started with 100 marbles, Sharon got 50 and Mike got 25.
- If Mike got 7, Zoë would have 7, and Sharon would have 14. That is 28 marbles all together.
- Sharon gets twice as many as either Zoë or Mike.
