Introduction
Display the Headline Story pictured in the sidebar to the class. To help children learn how to give more varied responses, you might ask questions to elicit some of these responses. The sample responses are deliberately broader than what a class is likely to produce in any session.
Headline Story
I have some raisins and my brother has some too. We want to find out who has more raisins without counting every one of them.
Possible student responses
- You could put the raisins into two piles on the table and see which pile looks bigger.
- You could eat one raisin at a time until one person runs out of raisins. Then, the person with some left had more at the start.
- You can start matching each of your raisins with your brother’s raisins and whoever has raisins left has more.
- You could weigh them on a scale and the person whose raisins are heavier most likely has more.
