Introduction
Share the Headline Story with the class. If children need help getting started, pose questions such as, “How much more does Meg put in than Matt?” or “How much goes into the piggy bank each time Matt puts in 1 nickel?”
Headline Story
Matt and Meg are saving up to buy their mother a present. Every time Matt puts a nickel in the piggy bank, Meg puts in a dime.
Possible student responses
- Meg puts in twice as much as Matt does.
- Matt puts in half as much as Meg does.
- If Matt puts in a nickel and Meg puts in a dime, they put in 15¢ in all.
- If Matt puts in 3 nickels, that is 15¢. If Meg puts in 3 dimes, that is 30¢ more.
- Every time Matt puts in a nickel, a total of 15¢ goes into the piggy bank, so you could count it that way instead of counting the dimes and nickels separately.
