Introduction
Display the image pictured in the sidebar, Triangle, Rectangles, and Circle, to children. Encourage the class to describe the picture in different ways.
Possible student responses
- There are four figures: a triangle, a rectangle, a square, and a circle.
- You could also say there is a triangle, two rectangles, and a circle, because a square is also a rectangle.
- If you ask what shape does not belong, I would say the circle because the other shapes have straight sides, and the circle does not.
- The circle is the only shape without corners.
