Introduction
Write the Headline Story numbers on the board. Then encourage children to make up sentences or stories about the numbers. After children have made some observations about the series of numbers, ask them to tell a story that includes the Headline Story numbers. You might use one of the responses below to give children an example.
Possible student responses
- The numbers are going up by two each time.
- The numbers 1, 3, and 5 are missing.
- If you continue the pattern, the next number will be 8.
- Two plus 2 is 4, and 4 plus 2 is 6.
- For breakfast I ate two pieces of toast, then I drank four glasses of juice and watched six minutes of television.
- I have two dogs and four goldfish, so I have six pets in all.
- Yesterday there were six donuts in a box on the counter in my kitchen. My brother ate two donuts, so there were only four donuts left.
- I scored two goals in my soccer game on Sunday. My friend also scored two goals, but we still lost 6 to 4.
