Introduction
Display the image, Hats, pictured in the sidebar and encourage children to describe each hat. Then have children make up stories and number sentences about the similarities and differences among the hats.
Possible student responses
- There are eight hats.
- The hats are blue, yellow, red, and green.
- All of the hats have some blue on them.
- None of the hats are all one color.
- Six of the hats have something on top of them and two of the hats do not.
- You could sort these hats by style or by color.
- You could put all the hats with green in one pile and all the other hats in another. A number sentence to represent this sorting is 3 + 5 = 8.
