Introduction
Display the Headline Story pictured in the sidebar and read it aloud to the class. If children need help coming up with some of the ideas suggested in the sample responses, pose questions such as, “How many days each week would he probably eat fruit?” or “How many pieces might he eat on each of those days?”
Headline Story
Each week Juan eats exactly 10 pieces of fruit. Usually he does not eat fruit on the weekends.
Possible student responses
- If Juan only eats fruit Monday through Friday, he might eat two pieces of fruit on each of these five days.
- 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10
- He might eat a lot of fruit on only a couple of days and less on the other days.
- He might eat five pieces of fruit on Monday and three on Wednesday, but only eat one piece on Tuesday and one piece on Friday.
- He might not eat any fruit on Thursdays.
- 5 + 1 + 3 + 0 + 1 = 10
- In two weeks, Juan will eat 20 pieces.
- In three weeks, he will eat 30 pieces.
