Read the Headline Story to your students. You may want to provide students with 6 paper squares or square tiles.
Headline Story
Six squares with each side measuring 1 centimeter are arranged so each square shares a side with at least one other square. An ant crawls all the way around the edge of the figure.
Possible student responses
- If the figure has a perimeter of 10 centimeters, it could be a 3-by-2 rectangle.
- A 1-by-6 rectangle has a perimeter of 14 centimeters.
- 14 centimeters is the greatest distance around such a figure.
