Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to think of imaginative ways to name solutions.
Headline Story
Mary learned a math trick. She asked each of her friends to think of a number. She told them to multiply their number by X, then divide their number by X. Their final number was always the same as their original number.
Possible student responses
- If Jen picks the number 6 and Mary tells her to multiply by 3, then divide by 3, Jen will end up with 6 again.
- Mary should tell the person to multiply and divide by the same non-zero number.
