Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to make interesting statements using information from the story.
Headline Story
Jose is building a tower out of popsicle sticks. He used _____ sticks for the first level. He used half as many sticks for the second level and half that number of sticks on the top level. He used fewer than 50 sticks total.
Possible student responses
- For the first level, Jose must have used a number of sticks that is a multiple of 4.
- If Jose used 20 sticks on the first level, then he used 10 on the second level and 5 on the top level, for a total of 35 sticks.
- There could not have been more than 7 sticks on the top level.
- There were ¼ as many sticks on the top level as on the bottom level.
