Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to think of interesting scenarios that incorporate information from the story.
Headline Story
Brady Elementary School has 465 students in grades K through 5. About the same number of students ride the bus as walk to school. Only 65 students ride a car to school.
Possible student responses
- Less than a fifth of students ride a car to school.
- Almost half the students walk to school.
- 400 students ride the bus or walk to school.
- About 200 students ride the bus and about 200 students walk.
- If the buses each hold 20 students and are all very full, about 10 buses are needed to take all of the students to school.
- If some of the buses are not full, more than 10 buses will be needed.
- If the buses hold 40 students and are mostly full, closer to 5 buses are needed to take students to school.
