Introduction
While students might make other mathematical observations, direct them to consider the possible areas of the garden in this Headline Story. They might draw pictures of the gardens.
Headline Story
A fence that is 24 yards long completely surrounds a garden.
Possible student responses
- If the garden is a square, it would be 6 yards on each side, and have an area of 36 square yards.
- If the garden is a non-square rectangle, there are many possibilities for its dimensions. One possibility is that the garden is 1 yard by 11 yards, with an area of 11 square yards.
- Another possibility is that the garden is 1.5 yards by 10.5 yards.
- The closer to a square the garden is, the greater its area.
