Introduction
Students should consider how John might measure the area and perimeter of various objects in order to respond to this Headline Story. You might ask students to first consider ways of making more precise measurements, and then to consider ways of estimating.
Headline Story
John wants to measure the area and perimeter of _____. He needs help.
Possible student responses
- John could measure the top of a rectangular table (the area) and the edge around it (the perimeter) using a ruler.
- He might measure the sides in inches or feet and then calculate the area in square inches or square feet.
- John could use rope to measure the perimeter of a small, round pool, and then measure the rope by matching it up to a yardstick.
- Figuring out the pool’s area would be harder, but John might make a rectangle around it, find the area of the rectangle, and then subtract some to make an estimate.
