Introduction
Prompt students by asking questions such as, “Can the product be 36?” and “Does the product have to be a whole number?”
Headline Story
A number between 4 and 5 is multiplied by a number between 7 and 8. What can you say about the product?
Possible student responses
- The product is between 28 and 40.
- If the factors are both closer to the smaller numbers, the product is closer to 28.
- If the factors are both closer to the larger number, the product is closer to 40.
- If the factors are 4.8 and 7.5, the product is 36.
- If the factors are 4.5 and 7.5 (in the middle of the two ranges), the product is 33.75 (less than the middle of the product range, which is 34).
