Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the class. Encourage them to solve the problem by drawing a picture and using information from the story.
Headline Story
Joy walked around three sides of a rectangular field. She measured the length of the first side and the total distance walked. Joy has figured out the entire distance around the field! How might she have done that?
Possible student responses
- Because the field is a rectangle, opposite sides of the field are the same length; the first and third side of the field have the same length.
- From the total length, subtract the length of the first side twice. The difference is the length of the second and fourth sides. Add the lengths of all four sides to find the total distance.
