Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage students to make an organized list to keep track of all the combinations and to think of creative ways to solve the problem.
Headline Story
I have 3 different shirts, orange, striped, and blue. I have 4 different skirts, orange, striped, checkered, and polka dotted. Of all the possible shirt-skirt outfits I can make, how many have an orange shirt? How many have stripes? How many total outfits can I make?
Possible student responses
- Four outfits have an orange shirt.
- Six outfits have stripes.
- I can make 12 different outfits total.
