Introduction

Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to draw diagrams of possible spinners and to think of other creative ways to solve the problem.

Headline Story

Hannah made a spinner with sections colored red, yellow, and blue, but it wasn’t a fair spinner. The spinner was most likely to land on blue and least likely to land on red. The probability of landing on yellow was $\frac{1}{4}$ . What can you say about the probability of landing on blue?

Possible student responses

The probability of landing on yellow is $\frac{1}{4}$ , so the probability of not landing on yellow is $\frac{3}{4}$ .
The probability of landing on blue is greater than $\frac{1}{4}$ , because blue is more likely than yellow.
The probability of landing on blue must also be less then $\frac{3}{4}$ , because there’s at least a small chance of landing on red.
