Grade 1

Share the Headline Story with the class and encourage children to find creative ways to complete the story. If children need help coming up with some of the ideas suggested in the sample responses, pose additional questions, such as, “What might Debbie’s four coins be?”, “What is the greatest (or smallest) amount Debbie could get?” or “Can we find all the possibilities?”

Debbie pulled 4 coins from a jar that has only dimes and nickels. It is possible that… It is impossible that…

- It is possible that Debbie has 4 nickels, or 20¢.
- It is possible that Debbie has 3 nickels and 1 dime, or 25¢.
- It is possible that Debbie has 3 nickels and 1 dime, or 25¢.
- It is impossible that Debbie has less than 20¢.
- It is impossible that Debbie has 4 quarters.
