Introduction
The goal of Headline Stories is for children to learn to translate situations and information into problems that can be answered mathematically. What information do we have? What information is missing? Is there information we need, but do not have? Encourage children to invent good questions or conclusions for each story.
Headline Story
Tony tossed two number cubes. The sum of the numbers he tossed was 8.
Possible student responses
- Tony tossed 5 and 3.
- He tossed 2 and 6.
- He did not toss a 1 because he would need a 7 on the other number cube, which is impossible.
- It is possible that he tossed the same number on both cubes: 4 + 4 = 8.
