Introduction
If we flip a penny, we expect that, over the long run, it will land on heads about half the time. But we don’t know what to expect if we flip a shell or a bottle cap. Maybe landing open-side up and down are not equally likely. One way to find out is to perform an experiment, as Leo does in this Headline Story.
Headline Story
Leo flipped a shell 100 times. It landed open-side up 73 times and open-side down 27 times. Shawna then flipped the shell 10 times and got 4 up and 6 down. Max is going to flip the shell one more time. Is it more likely to land open-side up or open-side down?
Possible student responses
- 10 trials is a very small number, so it’s better to make a prediction based on 100 trials.
- It appears that it is more likely the shell will land open-side up.
