Read the Headline Story to our students. Encourage them to use logical reasoning to draw conclusions about the number.
Headline Story
Deepa marked a point on a number line between 8 and 9 and labeled it with a decimal number. The number was closer to 9 than to 8.
Possible student responses
- The ones digit of the number must be 8.
- The number must be greater than 8.5 but less than 9.
- The number could be 8.8, 8.62, 8.55721, or any other number between 8.5 and 9.
- The tenths digit could be 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9.
