Tomika bought a birthday card and gave the cashier a $5 bill. The cashier gave her 1 bill and 3 coins as change. How much could the card cost?
Possible student responses
- Tomika must have received a $1 bill and some coins, so the card must have been less than $4.
- If the 3 coins were all quarters, then the card cost $3.25.
- If the 3 coins were 1 half dollar, 1 quarter and 1 dime, then the card cost $3.15. So the least the card could have cost is $3.15.
- If the 3 coins were pennies, then the card cost $3.97, which is the most the card could have cost.
