After writing this story on the board, ask your students to share their ideas. Encourage students to consider the situation where there is the same number of students per grade.
Headline Story
The Moss School has 600 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. There are close to 18 students per class as possible. What can you say about the number of classes?
Possible student responses
- I divided 600 by 18 and got 33 with a remainder of 6. That would be 33 classes, but 6 classes would have 19 students.
- Since there are 6 grades, there would be about 100 students in each grade. There could be 5 classes of 20 students for each grade.
