Read the Headline Story to the students. This problem involves comparing fractions and also approximation, as we are not told exactly how much Wendy’s parents and brothers shared.
Headline Story
Wendy, Julie, and Carla were having a sleepover. For dinner, they shared two small pizzas equally. Wendy’s parents and brother shared more than two small pizzas equally.
Possible student responses
- To share one pizza three ways, the girls might cut it into 3 pieces and each have 1 piece (
of a pizza). Sharing two pizzas, each girl would get two thirds of a pizza: 
. (If they cut a pizza into six parts, each girl would get two parts, or 
of that pizza, and so four sixths-of-a-pizza altogether: 
.) - Wendy’s parents and brother share more than two pizzas, so they must have eaten more than two thirds of a pizza (more than ). Sharing three pizzas, they’d each get 1. Sharing 4 pizzas (and cutting each into thirds, they’d each get 1 piece of each pizza, or four thirds.
