Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the students. If students seem stuck, you might prompt them with further questions such as: What were the missing numbers? What might the grocer have been counting?
Headline Story
At the grocery store, Nan overheard the grocer counting to himself: 12, 24, 36, 48, … Her mom asked a question. The next number Nan heard was 120.
Possible student responses
- The grocer is counting by 12s. The missing numbers are 60, 72, 84, 96, and 108. After 120 come 132, 144, and 156.
- The grocer may have been counting eggs because eggs are sold by the dozen.
