Read the Headline Story to the students. Encourage them to think of interesting scenarios that incorporate information from the story.
Headline Story
At the beginning of every math class, Mrs. Star has the class count by a particular number. Robin arrived late to class and heard someone say the number 39. Mrs. Star challenged her to give the next multiple, even though she hadn’t heard the previous numbers.
Possible student responses
- Since 39 is a multiple of 1, 3, 13, and 39, the next number could be 40, 42, 52, or 78.
- If the next number is 42, then Mrs. Star started with 3 and the previous numbers named were 36, 33, 30, 27, 24, and so on.
- If the next number is 52, the previous numbers were 26 and 13.
- If the next number is 78, Mrs. Star must have started at 39, and the next few numbers after 78 would be 117, 156, 195, and 234.
