Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the students. No question is asked. Encourage children to find good questions themselves. Examples: How many people could be sharing cupcakes? How many cupcakes would each get?
Headline Story
Jenna’s mom brought 40 cupcakes to school for Jenna’s birthday. She asked the teacher to give out as many cupcakes as possible. The students figured out that they could share all the cupcakes evenly, but only if they cut some of the cupcakes in half.
Possible student responses
- If there were 20 students in the class, each student could have 2 cupcakes, but they wouldn’t need to cut any.
- If there were 30 students, each student could have 1 cupcake but the remaining 10, cut in half, wouldn’t be enough for each to have another half.
