Introduction
Read the Headline Story to the class. The sample responses are deliberately broader than what a class is likely to produce in any session. With any Headline Story, you might ask one new question explicitly to help children learn to give more varied responses.
Headline Story
Kevin has twice as many coins as Daniel.
Who has more money?
Possible student responses
- You cannot tell because if Kevin’s coins are all pennies and Daniel has all dimes, Daniel would have more money.
- You need to know what coins they have.
- They could have the same amount of money. If Kevin has 8 pennies, Daniel could have 1 nickel and 3 pennies (4 coins) and they would both have 8¢.
