Introduction
Write the following story on the board. If any students have difficulty getting started, suggest that they draw pictures or use manipulatives. You might extend the story later by asking, “What if 5 children shared those cookies?”
Headline Story
Some children shared a box of 24 cookies equally. What fraction of the total number of cookies might each child get and how many cookies would that be?
Possible student responses
- If 6 children shared the cookies, they would each get of the cookies, or 4 cookies.
- If there were 12 children, they would each get of the cookies, or 2 cookies.
- If 8 children shared the cookies, they would each get of the cookies, or 3 cookies.
- The number of children sharing the cookies is the same as the bottom number in the fraction of the 24 cookies that each child gets.
- You divide the 24 cookies by the number of people sharing them to figure out how many cookies each child gets.
