Introduction
Write the following problem on the board. Encourage students to draw sketches if they wish.
Headline Story
The box of marbles can be shared evenly among 12 children. It can also be shared evenly among 16 children. How many marbles could there be in the box? Could 24 children share the box evenly?
Possible student responses
- There couldn’t be just 12 marbles, because then 16 and 24 children couldn’t share them.
- If the box has 24 marbles, 12 children and 24 children could share them, but not 16 children.
- If the box has 48 marbles, then 12, 16, or 24 children could share them evenly.
- There can be 48, 96, or any other number of marbles that is a multiple of 48.
- No matter what the number is, 24 children will be able to share them evenly.
