Introduction
Write the following story on the board or read it to the class. Encourage students to try many examples.
Headline Story
I know how much 
of Jacob’s money is and how much 
of Jesse’s money is. How can I find how much money they both have all together?
Possible student responses
- Double half of Jacob’s money (that’ll be how much he has) and quadruple the quarter of Jesse’s money. Then, add the two together.
- Find a half of what Jesse has by doubling the quarter of her money, add to a half of Jacob’s money, and double the result.
- We can make a chart to show some examples.
