Introduction

Write the following story on the board. Challenge any students who finish early to make multiple lists of 5 fractions.

Headline Story

I’m thinking of five fractions that are greater than $\frac{6}{12}$ , less than 1, and have different denominators. What might these be?

Possible student responses

Since $\frac{6}{12}$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ , you would make a list of five different denominators and pick each numerator to be greater than half the denominator.
You could make a list of fractions equivalent to $\frac{6}{12}$ and then increase each numerator.
