If students need help getting started, you might suggest that they sketch a pizza cut in half. They might put an X in one half to show the half that is not being considered in the story.
Headline Story
Mark bought a large pizza but planned to save half of it for tomorrow. Today he will share the other half with some of his friends. If they all get the same amount, what can you say about the size of pieces he and his friends will get?
Possible student responses
- If he has 3 friends, everyone will get one-fourth of the half of pizza, which is the same as one-eighth of the whole pizza.
- If he shares with 2 friends, everyone will get one-sixth of a pizza.
- If he has 5 friends, everyone will get one-twelfth of a whole pizza.
- If Mark is really hungry, he should try to share with fewer friends, so they get bigger pieces.
